  • "Teton Winter Day" 11x14 Week 7
The Tetons are majestic from any angle, but there is something extra dramatic looking across the Snake River directly at the Tetons, just bursting up over a vertical mile right out of the valley floor. The scene is especially rich for those who have been up there hiking, climbing or skiing. And for those who have not been up on the trails and crags, it is a feast for the eyes just looking at all the interesting places up there.

  • "Winter Refuge" 11x14 Week 6
Week 6 "Winter Refuge" 11x14 Fri. Feb. 11, 2011 Jackson: Winter on the National Elk Refuge is one of the Jackson Hole classic scenes. Every day there is drama and beauty out there. This is a glimpse at some of the grandeur and beauty as the late afternoon sun dances across the grasses that are still poking up through the building snowpack. This majestic fellow looks healthy and will probably make it through the tough winter. Others may not be so lucky. He'll lose his antlers in a month or so, then the snow will pull back to reveal the first spring grasses. Until then, these moments of warmth and glory out on the Refuge are probably a welcome respite from the winter's cold.

  • "Mush" 11x14 Week 5
Week 5 Day 7 "Mush!" Fri. Jan. 4, 2011 Jackson: I suppose the Stage Stop Sled Dog Race is nearly finished today down in Park City. It was fun working on this painting knowing the race that started like this a week ago at the Jackson Town Square has continued all week in different locations. I feel like I have been "catching the adventure." I hope this painting conveys the feeling of the excitement and power of the dogs, as they were picking up speed from the starting line, and the crowd cheering them on. It was a difficult, challenging, and fun painting.

  • "Skiing Jackson Hole" 14x11 Week 4
I really like how this came together. For me, it captures the thrill of not only the motion and fluidity of skiing, but the awesomeness of being up on the mountain, with Corbett's Couloir tantalizing up above. I like the sweeping motion of the telemark skier as the feature, with a circular motion in the lower right as one anticipates where the two skiers will go. This motion then kicks the attention up to the cliff faces and Corbett'sto explore. There is a sense of gravity, grace, and a whole interaction with the mounta

  • "Snow Draped Fence" 11x14 Week 3
"Snow Draped Fence" 11x14 2011 Week 3 Fri. Jan. 21, 2011 Jackson: I like it! The snow looks "poofy" and drapes lazily across the fence. After my eye explores the fence line, it wants to wander across the meadow to the open glades and trees in the background. It was a more challenging painting than I thought it would be and I really learned a lot in the process. Fri. Jan. 21, 2011 Jackson: I like it! • "Heading Home" 11x14 Week 2
2011 Weekly 11x14 Paintings - Week 2 This was a tough painting for me, partly because of the intensity of the value contrasts. In my reference photo it is difficult to see the eyes because of camera limitations in accurately recording the lights and darks. I wrestled back and forth with shapes, colors and values, finally honing in on a final painting I like. What I like most about this scene is the sensation of the amazingly colorful fox cruising along on top of the snow in the beautiful late afternoon light.
